Concept

Calgary is in the midst of transformation. Calgary House is the next stage of the city’s evolution.
The vision for Calgary House is a fully expressed ecosystem for living beautifully. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group in collaboration with author/artist Douglas Coupland, as the tower rises upwards, it transforms into Calgary House, a collection of penthouse-level homes starting from levels 30-58. As the building shifts to residential, exterior balconies are introduced to shape the form of the building.

Each home at Calgary House features interiors designed by Bjarke Ingels Group with unique home typologies ranging from studio, 1, 2 and 3 Bedroom homes. Each beautifully designed to optimize functionality and maximize liveability, an abundance natural light and fresh air combine with ergonomic design and technology to create ideal living environments.

The building’s façade fully integrates a programmable public art installation by author and artist, Douglas Coupland. Called Northern Lights, Coupland has created a series of animation sequences which illuminate the building’s façade, creating patterns of colour designed to complement the building’s curved skin and mineralogical underlying structure.

Calgary House is the natural continuation of the design philosophy of Gesamtkunstwerk that began with Vancouver House, its sister structure on the West Coast. Both projects were born from the idea of creating the total work of art at the scale of city building — exemplifying the integration of art and architecture.
